Held over the 28-29th April, we celebrate the collective insight and advice from some of our country’s finest legends of the lens. Since that moment, there have been many innovators like Joseph who have created something that has changed the future of our world. Yet, only a handful of those inventions have allowed us to reflect on where we have come from through the power of a single still image.
The work of a photographer is timeless. The images captured since 1825 of different decades, places and faces are a constant reminder of the ever-evolving nature of our world. From our greatest triumphs, to the horror of war, photography has no limits in what it can express.

As the art of photography continues to evolve in the digital age, accelerated by the latest innovations in technology, a greater number of people can now access photography than ever before. In fact, statistics indicate that the average person will see up to 1000 photographic images per day. Not even Joseph himself could have predicted that.
The aim of our Aperture Australia photography conference is to create an interactive space for hobbyists and professional photographers to develop their knowledge and skills while being inspired by the room of like-minded enthusiasts around them.
Aperture Australia attendees will hear exclusive presentations from a select list of influencers in the field of photography, representing an impressive range of disciplines. These speakers will talk openly about their most iconic works, the gear they use, turning points in their career, and the raw reality behind their profession. At the core of this conference is an open opportunity to connect with the personalities behind the camera, and find your own inspiration from what drives their passion.

Attendees of Aperture Australia 2018 will learn exactly what it takes to work for global brands such as National Geographic, Sony, Coca-Cola and Dove, or produce images for publications such as Esquire, Huffington Post or Rolling Stone.
Speakers will educate the audience on the gear and fear needed to pursue their photographic work in war-torn areas of unrest, and solo expeditions in some of the world’s most extreme locations. Talks will tour the audience beyond charming coastal fringes to glamping in the Great Barrier Reef, camping on an Arctic fjord, and capturing that first flicker of light at daybreak.
YOUR HOST: AWARD-WINNING TV JOURNALIST
Ray Martin is the face of Aperture Australia 2018. Not only is he a veteran interviewer and iconic television journalist, but Ray is also a keen photographer and will be bringing his respect for the art of photography to the stage. As host of the weekend conference, Ray will introduce each speaker, conduct on-stage interviews and lead the audience through thought-provoking panel discussions.
